Read the sermon text: Hebrews 5:11-6:12
Read the sermon summary: Are you making progress in the faith? Are you more spiritually mature than you were five years ago? How can that be quantified? In our text for this Sunday, the author of Hebrews briefly interrupts his train of thought to exhort, warn, and comfort his readers. This section of Scripture is perhaps one of the most controversial in all of the Bible. What will help in our interpretation us is considering the intention of the author. It seems his primary intention is not to give a theological treatise on whether or not one can lose his salvation, but to warn his readers once again to take care that they don’t let go of their confession in Christ. The author follows up this warning with a word of comfort based on the fruit he sees in them: “we feel sure of better things” for you in regards to salvation. How can we guard ourselves and one another from falling away? How can we spur one another on with exhortations, warnings, and words of comfort?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
He Will Hold Me Fast
When I fear my faith will fail
Christ will hold me fast
When the tempter would prevail
He will hold me fast
I could never keep my hold
Through life's fearful path
For my love is often cold
He must hold me fast
Chorus
He will hold me fast
He will hold me fast
For my Savior loves me so
He will hold me fast
Those He saves are His delight
Christ will hold me fast
Precious in His holy sight
He will hold me fast
He'll not let my soul be lost
His Promises shall last
Bought by Him at such a cost
He will hold me fast
For my life He bled and died
Christ will hold me fast
Justice has been satisfied
He will hold me fast
Raised with Him to endless life
He will hold me fast
Till our faith is turned to sight
When He comes at last
