Worship Preparation - September 15, 2024
Read the sermon text: 2 Timothy 2:20-26
Read the sermon summary: From the “Beatitudes” (such as in Matthew 5), we learn what it means for one to be truly blessed. It is there we find the striking promise, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” In our passage this week, Paul builds on this promise by encouraging Timothy to remain steadfast in his purity of heart to ensure the proclamation of the gospel is not weakened by the distractions and deceptions of this world. Not only are the pure in heart those who see God, Paul reasons, but they help others see God as well. And so, in light of this, what does it mean for us to cleanse ourselves and serve God from a pure heart? What types of circumstances or habits or people push us away from a pure heart and toward that which is dishonorable? As we prepare to engage these questions together, reflect on how our purity of heart is meant to be a beacon of the gospel to others, that “God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth.”
