Worship Preparation - June 9, 2024
Read the sermon text: Hebrews 12:3-17
Read the sermon summary: In the midst of our suffering it seems almost impossible to see anything except the pain. The author of Hebrews has called us to look beyond our present sufferings to Jesus, who will see us through to the end, and we will receive the commendation of God. In our present passage, the author gives us another encouragement when faced with trials. He gives us a heavenly perspective on suffering in faith, relating our suffering with the loving discipline of God. We see that our suffering isn’t outside the control of God. We aren’t simply subject to the whims of evil forces in the world. Instead, we see that our suffering falls under the purview of a loving heavenly Father with plans to make us share in his holiness. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What comparison does the author make between earthly fathers and God in these verses? According to these verses, what is the immediate experience and the long-term result of discipline? What instructions does the author give about living in Christian community and pursuing holiness?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Christ Our Hope In Life And Death
What is our hope in life and death
Christ alone Christ alone
What is our only confidence
That our souls to Him belong
Who holds our days within His hand
What comes apart from His command
And what will keep us to the end
The love of Christ in which we stand
Chorus
O sing hallelujah
Our hope springs eternal
O sing hallelujah
Now and ever we confess
Christ our hope in life and death
What truth can calm the troubled soul
God is good God is good
Where is His grace and goodness known
In our great Redeemer's blood
Who holds our faith when fears arise
Who stands above the stormy trial
Who sends the waves that bring us nigh
Unto the shore the rock of Christ
Unto the grave what will we sing
Christ He lives Christ He lives
And what reward will heaven bring
Everlasting life with Him
There we will rise to meet the Lord
Then sin and death will be destroyed
And we will feast in endless joy
When Christ is ours forevermore
