Worship Preparation - May 19, 2024
Read the sermon text: Hebrews 11:1-16
Read the sermon summary: CS Lewis famously wrote, “If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.” In our passage for this Sunday, the author calls his readers to live by faith. After his declaration in 10:39 that we are of “those who have faith and preserve their souls,” he surveys the Old Testament examples of faith and shows that they were commended by God. As we see in the summary in verses 13-16, their faith was characterized by a dissatisfaction with the things of the world. They desired something better… that which God had promised them. The author assures us that God has fulfilled his promise by preparing for a city for all those who seek a homeland with him in heaven.
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Give Me Faith
I need You to soften my heart
And break me apart
I need You to open my eyes
To see that You're shaping my life
All I am
I surrender
Chorus
Give me faith to trust what You say
That You're good and Your love is great
I'm broken inside I give You my life
I need You to soften my heart
And break me apart
I need You to pierce through the dark
And cleanse every part of me
'Cause I may be weak
But Your Spirit's strong in me
My flesh may fail
My God You never will
